Singles – Relaxing in the Match and Reducing Errors
BASIC Singles THOUGHT’S as you walk on that court…
- Your first task on every shot is to have good net clearance. Aim your shots 3-5 feet above the net to cut down on unforced errors and ensure good depth on your shot.
- Aim the ball well inside the lines. The perfect cross court shot should be hit to a target 6 feet from the sideline and 6 feet from the baseline for a great margin for error.
- When forced to play a defensive shot, aim your shot high, deep, and cross court so that you have time to recover.
- Early in the point, hit your shots deep cross court or deep down the middle. This reduces your chance of error and keeps your opponent in a neutral position.
- Movement to the ball and early preparation are the keys to consistent strokes. Aim to hit every ball in your strike zone with the proper shape to the shot, spin to the ball, and be well balanced at contact.
- It is generally safer to direct a ball back to the direction it came from rather than changing the angle. Change the direction of a ball only if you’re in good position to attack a shot, step into and drive through it.
