Doubles and Singles Match Strategies
Your match strategy is the overall game plan that you employ during competition. These strategies will help you stay focused and keep your game plan simple.
BEFORE the MATCH
Use imagery. See yourself executing your best tactic and hitting your favorite shots . Devise your strategy. Review their strengths and weaknesses and how you’ll respond.
1st SERVICE GAME
Challenge yourself to get 80% of your 1st serves in. Play their weakness and try to find your rhythm and gain early confidence.
1st RETURN of SERVE GAME
Statistically this is your best opportunity to break their serve. Keep the ball crosscourt on the 1st serve, attack the 2nd serve.
SET up GAMES
A game that moves you within a game within the 1st set. It’s added pressure for your opponent.
2nd SET PRESSURE
The first 2 games of the 2nd set could very well be the key to the whole match. Holding serve or breaking their serve causes added pressure on your opponent.
REBREAK GAMES
Statistically, this is the best chance of breaking their serve. Breaking back after you’ve just lost you’re serve is the easiest way to regain momentum and put the pressure on them.
PLAYING for the SET or MATCH
Stay the course. Play the game that got you there. You don’t need to initiate play. No unforced errors. Keep the pressure on, but controlled pressure.
MOMENTUM POINTS
Stringing 2 or more points together. When your winning, stay in the groove and don’t over analyze. When losing, change pace, position, height, depth, spin, whatever it takes.
